Sailing Classes

SSA offers sailing classes in partnership with the City of Sandpoint's Parks and Recreation Department.

There are many ways to learn to sail, but taking a formal class provides an excellent foundation for new sailors to gain confidence and build upon.

By taking one of our classes, you will learn:

  • Basic sailing terminology

  • Parts and functions of a sailboat

  • Helm commands

  • Basic sail trim

  • Points of sail

  • Buoyage

  • Seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.

Classes take place on shore and on the water. PFDs are required and participants should be comfortable swimming in deep water.

We offer the following formal classes:

Youth Small Boat Sailing  (Ages 10-18)

The fundamental basics of sailing are best learned in small boats (dinghies). Graduates will learn to safely operate a sailing dinghy by participating in both shore based and on the water activities all under the watchful eye of one of our Sandpoint Sailing Association instructors.

Basic Keelboat Sailing (Ages 16+)

Graduates will be able to responsibly skipper and crew a simple (20’ - 25’) sloop rigged keelboat in light to moderate winds and sea conditions.
